We love working with kids and students!
So, we’ve created a few ways to make our walks
more fun and meaningful for the young people
who join us.
REQUEST A LEARNING GUIDE
To help students connect to the walk experience as much as possible, we have created learning guides that we will be happy to send you via email when you book a walk. The learning guide is intended to be used before or after a walk experience. There’s just too much going on during a walk to use it then.
TURN-ON THE ACTOR/PUBLIC SPEAKER IN YOUR STUDENTS
If you have students who love to ham-it-up and are serious about history, consider having them take an active role in the walk you book . Each student who would like a role will be asked to do some research about their character and the period in which the walk is set. Then, along with our costumed, historical character they will help tell the story of the White House and one of the functions it serves.
BASED ON THE WALK YOU BOOK, STUDENTS CAN COME PREPARED TO PLAY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING ROLES:
- Liz Carpenter’s companion on First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson’s Beautification Campaign
- A reporter for the National Intelligence Newspaper who is on the walk to report on John Ousley’s work.
- A member of the White House Secret Service who is glad to see Quentin not creating mischief.
Since there is one role for each walk, several students may share the same role. There will be appointed times in the walk for each to participate using his or her own words. We have a set of questions related to each character above to help direct a student’s research. Students may come in costume, if they would like. (as period correct, as possible.)
